Weather patterns flip-flop; may colder than usual

April and May seem to have swapped weather patterns this year.

While temperatures in April averaged more than two degrees above normal, May brought the reverse at roughly two degrees colder than usual.

"It seems we went right from slush to sweat," said David Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada.

"But May has been as much colder as April has been warmer," he said. And temperature isn't the only element out of sync. Sunshine and showers have both been irregular this spring.

April brought less than half its usual precipitation, while May has surpassed its benchmark, said Phillips.

"April was also a very sunny month," he said.

The same can't be said for May, which has seen about 25 per cent less sun than the seasonal average predicts.

And while the long weekend featured relatively frigid temperatures that outdoor enthusiasts have had to endure, warmer weather is on the way.

"The good news is one weekend doesn't determine what the rest of the season will be like," Phillips said.

By Friday, things will start to warm up in Sarnia and continue through the weekend with plenty of sunshine and daytime highs reaching 23 degrees Sunday.

"This weekend will be pretty glorious," said Phillips. "It will certainly make up for the past weekend. The problem is it's not a long weekend."

The forecast for June is drier and warmer than usual.

"There certainly will be more than your fair share of smog days," said Phillips. "So I think people will be complaining as much about that as they were about the cold this long weekend."
