Rough and Chilly Start to the FLW Walleye Tour Season
Northeast winds threaten to hold over 120 Pro anglers and their Co Anglers on shores of Lake Erie for the start of the FLW Walleye Tour season. Only Mother Nature can change what is sure to be a predicted fate tomorrow. A small craft advisory has been issued for the area by the National Weather Service, and with water temps this cold, it would make calling the first day a simple decision. A decision to fish or not, wouldn't be made until around 6am tomorrow morning.
"Whatever the guys found prefishing is for naught. It's all a new ball game now. Most of the pros have not been on the water for 2 days now, due to Northeast/East winds, so no one knows what to expect. You go to where you had clean water and it's all mud now. Wind and currents can wreak havoc on the best laid plans. So, it's going to come down to whoever can find the "right" water that will come out on top at this event", said Pro, Rick LaCourse.
The forecast looks promising after Wednesday with deminishing winds and warmer temperatures expected. By Saturday the fishing should be excellent.
LaCourse added, "The walleye in the Western Basin right now are spawning and post spawn fish. There are plenty of fish to be found. It's getting them to bite that's going to be the trick. Lake Erie fish get lock-jaw in really muddy water, and if the water is too clean, the water temps are too cold for the baitfish to be there. And, if you don't find the baitfish, you won't find the Walleye. It's that simple."
Fish are being caught several ways right now. They can be jigged off the reefs with heavy hairjigs tipped with minnows or plastic swim bodies, or trolled up using crankbaits and crawler harnesses. Some use three way rigs to fish the reefs, and some use blade baits to get reaction bites.
