Sorry it's taken me a bit, but I finally completed my list, although I forgot to add Sauger which taste and look just like small Pickerel.

Someone recently asked me how I cook my fish.... I don't own a deep fryer so I typically either fry em in some butter with garlic (mostly do this with Trout species), or I do enjoy a nice Cedar Plank Rainbow fillet. For most other species I usually toss em in some beaten up eggs, then into some pancake mix (I prefer butter milk flavoured) as I find this gives the batter a bit of a sweet taste vs just plain flour, although you can also use flour and add your own favourite spices.

dont forget "white" perch, real agressive and easily caught once you find a school of them.
larger ones are not bad, just remove as much of mudline as you can and let soak in cold water for an hour or so before cooking

Although I've probably eaten them... I've always had a bit of a tough time telling the difference between them and Silver Bass.. if you ever want to start a long argument go down to the pier at Glasgow and catch one then ask what it is... lol

If they have "stripes" going the length of the body they're silvers---related to striped bass
If they are plain janes (no stripes) white perch

Ahhh... cool thanks.. yeah probably have eaten them. It's funny that a lot of people say they won't eat Silvers, but I've fried them up along with Perch in the past and no one knows the difference...

ive eaten about 6 silvers myself so far....man are they good.....to me it tasted just like the smallmouth I kept....less meat overall but hey, you can always catch more.....I ate my pickeral the other day it it didnt taste like much....I could still tell it was fish but it sure didnt taste like anything else I have eaten

A few weeks ago out on Lake Erie one guy with us kept the silvers.
I brought a few fillets home and cooked them up with the pickeral.
They were as good as the pickeral.... all these years I have thrown them back when caught in cold water.

WITH THE SILVERS LIKE ANY OTHER FISH..THEY ARE GOOD IF CAUGHT IN COLD WATER AND BLEED THEM OUT RIGHT AWAY AND PUT IN A COOLER ON ICE. WE ALWAYS BREAK ONE OR MORE OF THEIR GILL RAKERS WITH THE PLIERS WHEN PUTTING THEM IN THE COOLER AND THEY BLEED OUT FINE.WE DO THE SAME WITH ALL THE PICKEREL AND THE MEAT IS SNOW WHITE.IF PEOPLE STARTED TO KEEP THEM ON ERIE THERE WOULD BE LESS TO CLEAN OFF OUR LINES...LOL

shape of the forehead is the biggest give away for me telling the difference between silvers and white perch. also, one of them has a light purple color around the mouth jaw area (white perch I think)
